33:50 Clearly Longstreet knew without a shadow of a doubt what the outcome would be. Hundreds if not thousands would die for absolutely no other reason, for Robert E Lee's ego. That's why he delayed and delayed and gave half-assed excuses to Lee. Hoping to god Lee would get some senses back and call it off. He was trying to save those men. But finally the 'The Boss' is the boss and he Longstreet had to give the order.

My two favorite Southern historians that bring the Southern perspective on the Civil War. Shelby Foote and Matt Atkinson! Shelby gave us insight into thinking of the upper crust of the Old South. While Matt gives insight into thinking of the common folk (some would say the greatest example of Southern Pride) the foot soldier. Oh sure, Lee on his high horse might have gotten all the glory. But he would have been nothing without the those often barefoot and starving infantrymen.

Matt Atkinson, love your accent, and I'm a Yankee, born in Massachusetts, raised in Oregon . You're willing to share all your knowledge of Gettysburg Battle. I've been studying more of the Confederate generals, because I didn't know much about them, although I took a Civil War class at SWOCC in Coos Bay, Oregon. That city has many city avenues named after Union generals like Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, so we mostly studied them, which I find interesting, since quite a number of the original white residents there were actually Citizens of the Confederacy, who left either just before the Civil War because they could smell war coming and didn't want their teenage boys to be slaughtered, so they left, some bringing their black slaves in town. They were told " no black people allowed in Oregon at all" ( law passed in 1857, kept when Oregon became a state in 1859, and ditched in 1926!😮) former Confederate slave masters settled town of Powers, Oregon in 1870, after ships around South America, and landing in Coos Bay, and taking land claims in Powers, about 60 miles SE of there. Lots of southerners settled Willamette Valley and south Coast. I was quite surprised 😯 to discover that until mid 1920s, the KKK was quite powerful and popular here! There's even some prejudice here now, since one of my old landlords, whose grand father was a slave masters, wouldn't watch football because they had black players! Even when we offered him his favorite soft brownies, he would watch it!

No Excuse for O'Neal however Iverson did try and redeem himself gaining plaudits for his work with the cavalry where he showed bravery and competence late in the war , Its debateable where Iverson was at the time his brigade advanced most sources put him in the rear of the brigade but not in the woods its also worth noting the lack of senior officers in the regiments and the reason why no skirmish lines were thrown out to add to that Baxter's union brigade were hard as nails veterans.

I was able to attend a Pickett’s Charge walk with Troy, the first week of August. All the way from Canada and my very first time at GNMP. We arrived late in the afternoon and his was the last tour of the day. I’m sure glad I got to meet him. Super knowledgeable and a super great guy to speak with as well. I’ve read just about every book out there in regards to Pickett’s Charge, but to hear him describe the men, actions and emotions while standing on the very same ground was an eye opener indeed. I planned on returning next year for a longer visit and was hoping to attend another of his walks. To everyone who knows him, I am certain he will be dearly missed.

Matt Atkinson tour and knowledge of Gettysburg as well as your speaking style in presenting that knowledge. It has absolutely enriched all our lives. I've learned more about Gettysburg and that sacred ground, as well as what took place there. Your knowledge surpasses any and all lecturers and books I've ever read on the subject!!! Your Sir should be a Professor! For I'm sure your lecture hall would not only contain students of the class but half the campus as well sitting in that lecture just to see you speak, Sir. And your Magic in Bringing history to LIFE like no other. Party on Dude! In your Retirement.

Custer was a Brigadier General in command of the Michigan (Cavalry) Brigade at Gettyusburg. He was NOT a Lietenant! I have no clue where this gentleman got his information from but it's wrong. I could be wrong about this but I don't believe the USMC uses the color red on their uniforms to denote artillery. The army may well but NOT every branch of the US military. My father was an artillerest in 3-H-14 4th Marine Division in WW2 and there is no red to signify artillery on his uniform. I don't see red on modern Marine artillery uniforms either. Again, I have no clue where the Major gets his information from.
